A few of my favourites...
Like many writers, The Lord of the Rings, has been a huge inspiration in my creative life. The book continues to be beautiful and awe-inspiring even though I've read it 5-6 times. But when it comes to epics, I like to read a little bit further back in time than the 1950s. Beowulf, The Odyssey, and The Iliad are some of my favourite ancient epics.
But I doesn't find inspiration in just books!
Besides stories, I find a lot of motivation in listening to music. Soundtracks, classical music and Renaissance are my favourites.
I also enjoy movies. A few of my favourites are Interstellar, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, Amadeus, and Seabiscuit.
What I write...
I have completed a fantasy trilogy (Ranger's Apprentice meets the Mistmantle Chronicles), a few contemporary novels, (Swallows and Amazons meets The Penderwicks) and a couple novellas that can best be described as "Hardy Boys meets The Mysterious Benedict Society."
Despite the wide variety of genres that I enjoy writing, I have found the most pleasure in converting ballads into historical fiction novels. I have always been a lover of the English, Scottish and Appalachian ballads and have the desire to flesh out elusive plots or characters. This involves a great deal of research to properly understand time period and culture, but in crafting my latest novel, I discovered the thrill of research.
But no matter what I'm writing, you can count on the fact that it will be crafted from a Biblical worldview.
